Life

Henry Bright was born in Saxmundham between 1810 and 1814, probably the ninth child of watchmaker Jerome Bright and his wife Susannah Alburgh. He was apprenticed to a druggist in Woodbridge by his father . After graduation he went to Norwich , where he worked as a druggist or pharmacist in the local hospital. In Norwich at that time there was a group of landscape painters ( The Norwich Society of Arts ) with whom he came into contact and which eventually inspired him to turn to painting professionally. In 1833 he married Eliza Brightley in his hometown of Saxmundham.

In 1836 the family moved to London , where Henry Bright spent the next twenty years. He became a member of the Institute of Painters in Water Colors , in whose exhibitions he took part in 1841 and 1844. He then took part in the exhibitions of the Royal Academy with oil paintings. During this time he also made several trips and painted landscapes of the Rhine , the French and Dutch coasts and the Yorkshire Moors. During his time in London, four children were born to him, two sons and two daughters, only the latter reaching adulthood. His wife Eliza died in 1848.

For health reasons, Henry Bright moved back to Saxmundham with his two daughters in 1848, where he lived in his brother's house. In 1860 he moved to nearby Surrey , and from 1868 he lived in Ipswich , where he had professional contacts since the 1850s, as he was a member of the Suffolk Fine Art Association and participated in its exhibitions in Ipswich. But he also traveled regularly to London for business reasons, and to take part in and visit exhibitions.

Henry Bright died in Ipswich in 1873.
