Henry Carey (poet)

Henry Carey (* 1687 ; † October 4, 1743 in London ) was an English poet and composer .

Life

He composed musical farces and songs, including the drama The Honest Yorkshireman ( 1736 ), the well-known English-speaking ballad Sally in Our Alley , which was printed in a collection of his works in 1737 . Also Calliope celebrated two years later with Kitty Clive success. Despite his popularity, he lived in poverty due to the activity of plagiarists .

It was later claimed by his son that Carey was the author of what would later become the British national anthem, God Save the Queen .
