from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Henry Gabriel Blosser (born March 16, 1928 in Harrisonburg , Virginia , United States , † March 20, 2013 in Lansing ) was an American experimental nuclear physicist and accelerator physicist.

Blosser studied physics at the University of Virginia with a bachelor's degree in 1951, a master's degree in 1952 and a doctorate in 1954. As a post-doctoral student , he was in the cyclotron core physics group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory , from 1956 as a group leader (Cyclotron Analogue One). In 1958 he became an associate professor and in 1961 a professor at Michigan State University . Since 1990 he has been a Distinguished University Professor. From 1958 to 1966 and 1969 to 1980 he was head of the cyclotron laboratory and from 1985 to 1989 co-director of the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory.

He became known for developments in accelerator physics, whereupon he received five patents. Among other things, he was involved in the development of cyclotrons with superconducting magnets ("superconducting cyclotrons") including compact superconducting cyclotrons for neutron therapy .

Since 1984 he has also been an adjunct professor in the Radiation Oncology Department at Wayne State University .

Blosser was a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) from 1968 and a Guggenheim Fellow from 1973 to 1974 . In 1992 he received the Tom W. Bonner Prize for Nuclear Physics from the APS.
