Life

Neff was born in Massachusetts to two art historians. Four years later, his family moved to the suburbs of Chicago . Due to his family environment, he read a lot and got to know Greek and Nordic mythology at an early age . When he was around eleven he came across a book on Celtic mythology , which fascinated him because of its differences from Greek mythology. In addition, he was very fond of drawing and writing. Neff studied history at New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois and at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York . He initially considered studying law, but instead took a position as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company . He left this company after five years and became a history teacher at Stuart Hall High School in San Francisco . In early 2003, during his first winter vacation as a teacher, he began to write his first book. This is the first part of the series School of Magicians (English: The Tapestry Series ), which he wrote as an author and illustrated himself. 5 books have already been published in this series. The fifth volume was originally scheduled to appear in October 2013. However, the date was postponed to the end of 2014 because, according to his statement in his blog, he was not yet finished with the manuscript at that time. He began the last chapter, as he announced on his blog, on March 26, 2014. On April 22, 2014, he also published the entire first chapter on his blog. On June 14, 2014, he also announced that now that he had finished all work on The Red Winter, he would begin to write another series, which will take place in the world of School of Magicians, but some 1000 years after the events of The Red Winter is playing. He published more information about the series on July 25, 2014 on his blog. There he wrote that the name of the series, the world and the ruling kingdom should be Impyrium . According to Neff's announcement, the central characters of the first volume of the trilogy, published in 2016, are a 12-year-old magician, the last offspring of the family that has ruled for thousands of years and a 13-year-old boy who ran away from a mining village.

Neff is married, lives in Brooklyn , New York City and has a son who was born in 2013. Neff wrote jokingly on his blog, “He was so impatient to read a draft of The Red Winter, he decided to arrive 5 weeks early.” (German: “He was so impatient to read the draft for The Red Winter that he decided 5 weeks early to come. ”) His second child was born in 2014.
