The Stichaeinae are a subfamily of the fish family of the spine backs (Stichaeidae) in the partial order of the eel mother relatives (Zoarcales). All 14 species in the group are bottom-dwelling marine fish. Twelve species occur in the cool waters of the northern Pacific, two more in the northwestern Atlantic ( Ernogrammus zhirmunskii in the Davis Strait and Ulvaria subbifurcata on the coasts of Newfoundland and the New England states ).

features

The body of the stichaeinae is elongated, but less than that of most other spine backs. The head is relatively large but without skin flaps or other skin outgrowths as in many other spine backs and without scales. Palatine teeth are present. The anal fin has one to three fin spines at its beginning. The relatively large pectoral fins are supported by 14 to 18 fin rays, the pelvic fins by a spine and 3 to 5 fin rays. The number of eddies is 43 to 61. The number of Branchiostegal rays is six. The sideline system is well developed on the head and occurs in double rows in most species. On the fuselage it is complex with multiple channels and different branching patterns. The Stichaeinae are 7.5 to 60 cm long.

Almost nothing is known about the life of the Stichaeinae.
