Henry Howard, 6th Duke of Norfolk

Henry Howard, 6th Duke of Norfolk ( July 12, 1628 - January 13, 1684 ) was an English nobleman . He was the second son of Henry Howard, 22nd Earl of Arundel , and Elizabeth Stuart. He followed his brother Thomas as the Duke of Norfolk after his death in 1677 . He had previously been promoted to Baron Howard of Castle Rising in 1669 and Earl of Norwich in 1672 . In 1672 he achieved the reinstatement of his family in the office of Earl Marshal of England , which they still hold today.

In about 1652 Henry married Anne Somerset, daughter of Edward Somerset, 2nd Marquess of Worcester , and Elizabeth Dormer . In January 1678 he claimed his seat in the House of Lords for the first time , but in August of the same year a law was passed due to the alleged papist conspiracy that forbade Catholics to sit in one of the two English parliaments. He refused to renounce his belief and went into exile in Bruges for three years . Here he built a house in the neighborhood of a Franciscan convent, where he could freely pursue his faith. He later donated large parts of his library, property and buildings to the Royal Society .

The titles of nobility created for him died out with his grandson in 1777. The title of Duke of Norfolk and the subordinate dignity as well as the office of Earl Marshal went to the descendants of his brother Charles Howard of Greystoke.
