from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Henry Julius Salomon Sand (born December 7, 1873 in Dundee , Scotland, † October 18, 1944 in Nottingham ) was a Scottish electrochemist who dealt with electroanalysis and especially electrogravimetry , and today in particular through the Sand equation named after him is known.

Life

Sand studied in Dresden - Walther Hempel was one of his teachers - and Zurich and received his doctorate in organic chemistry in 1898 with Eugen Bamberger at the Polytechnic in Zurich. He then worked for a short time with William Ramsay at University College London and from 1899 to 1901 with Percy Frankland . From 1901 to 1914 he was a lecturer at University College in Nottingham , from 1914 at the Sir John Cass Institute in London. From 1921 until his retirement in 1938 he was head of the department of inorganic and physical chemistry.

Works

Sand published 46 scientific papers and a three-volume book series on electrochemistry and electroanalysis:

  • Henry JS Sand: Electrochemistry and Electrochemical Analysis. Volume I. Electrochemical Theory . Blackie & Son, London 1939, OCLC 895200007 .
  • Henry JS Sand: Electrochemistry and Electrochemical Analysis. Volume II Gravimetric Electrolytic Analysis and Electrolytic Marsh Tests . Blackie & Son, London 1940, OCLC 895199993 .
  • Henry JS Sand: Electrochemistry and Electrochemical Analysis. Volume III: Electrical Methods Applied to Titration, Moisture Determination and pH Measurement . Blackie & Son, London 1941, OCLC 938496885 .
