Henry Prunières (born May 24, 1886 in Paris , † April 11, 1942 in Nanterre ) was a French musicologist . He initiated the creation of a complete edition of the works of the composer Jean-Baptiste Lully , published after his death, and awakened awareness of his leading role in the establishment of the musical style typical of France up to the Revolution .

Life

At the Sorbonne , Prunières was a student of Romain Rolland from 1906 . In 1908 he was entrusted with the cataloging of the musical collections of the Biblioteca Laurenziana in Florence and gave lessons at the École des Hautes Études Sociales between 1909 and 1914 . The subject of his doctoral thesis from 1913 was L'Opéra italien en France avant Lulli (The Italian opera in France before Lulli), for which he also wrote the thèse : Le Ballet de Cour en France avant Benserade et Lully . Prunière's writing style was popular science and of his books Cavalli et l'opéra vénetien found the largest readership. After founding the Revue musicale in 1920 , he directed the concerts in the Vieux-Colombier from 1921 and was from 1924 occasionally a correspondent for the New York Times in Paris until he graduated from the Diplôme Technique de Biblithecaire in 1935.
