Henry Sass (born April 24, 1788 in London , † 1844 ibid) was an English painter and teacher. He founded a prestigious art school in London that was attended by many well-known British painters of the 19th century.

Live and act

Henry Sass was hardly from a family of artists who originally came to England from Latvia . His older half-brother Richard Sass was also a painter. Henry Sass studied at the Royal Academy , where he also exhibited from 1808 to 1838. He started out as a history painter , but then turned to portraiture . In 1815 he married Mary Robinson, with whom he had nine children over the years. In the same year he went on a two-year trip to Italy .

Failing to make a living from painting, Henry Sass decided to open a drawing school for aspiring artists who wanted to prepare for the Royal Academy. It was the first drawing school of its kind in London. His students later included such well-known artists as Charles West Cope , William Frith , William Edward Frost and John Everett Millais . Henry Sass's drawing school was also supported by the President of the Royal Academy Thomas Lawrence .

In 1842 he left the management of the school to Stephen Carry due to health problems. Henry Sass died in 1844.
