Henry William Stiegel
Henry William Stiegel , called Baron Stiegel (born May 13, 1729 near Cologne , † January 10, 1785 in Manheim , Pennsylvania ) was a German - American glassblower.
Life
In 1750 Henry William Stiegel emigrated to Philadelphia and founded an iron forge in Lancaster County. The profits from the business enabled him to buy several pieces of land in 1762, on which Stiegel founded the city of Manheim . Seven years later he founded the American Flint Glass Manfactory and brought glassblowers from Venice , England and Germany. They produced high-quality dishes made of glass in the colors blue, green, purple and made of crystal clear glass. But after only five years the glass factory went bankrupt and he sold the factory to a Frenchman .
