Henry de Gray († 1219 ) was an English nobleman. He is the first verifiable member of the noble Gray family .

According to the chronicle The genealogy of the most noble and ancient family of Gray , published in 1718 from the family archives , the various Gray families were descended from an Anchitel , a Norman noblewoman of the 11th century. However, the first detectable ancestor is Henry de Gray, who is said to have been a son of Richard de Gray. Henry de Gray received from King Richard the Lionheart as a reward for his services the Grays Thurrock estate in Essex , which had previously belonged to the Jew Isaac . In Thurrock, Gray married Isolda Bardolf in 1199 , a daughter of Hugh Bardolf and Isobel Aquillion . Isolda became her father's heir, and before 1201 Gray came into possession of Codnor Castle in Derbyshire . Gray continued to build Codnor Castle. During the First Barons ' War he sided with the king, after which he was awarded the Grimston estate in Nottinghamshire in 1216 .

Gray had several children with his wife, Isolda Bardolf, including:

Grey's widow Isolda married Richard de Mendre in 1229 . Three of his sons each founded a branch of the Gray family: his eldest son and main heir Richard de Gray founded the Gray of Codnor family, which consisted of male inheritance until 1496. The second son, John Gray, inherited the Shirland estate in Derbyshire . By marriage he acquired Wilton Castle in Herefordshire , so that the family was called the Gray of Wilton and was in male line of succession until 1614. The third son, William Gray, started a family in Sandiacre , Derbyshire. The fourth son Robert is considered to be the progenitor of the Gray of Rotherfield family , but this has not been proven.
