Henryk Makowski (born November 15, 1910 in Kremenez , † January 30, 1997 in Warsaw ) was a Polish paleontologist and geologist .

Life

After graduating from high school in Kremenez, Henryk Makowski studied zoology and anatomy at the University of Vilnius and geology and paleontology at the University of Lemberg, graduating in 1939 with Jana Samsonowicza on fossil sea urchins from the Turonian . He then worked there as an assistant and, after the Soviet occupation, as a geologist in the exploration of coal deposits on the Bug in the Soviet Union. In 1943/44 he worked at the Polish Geological Institute, then under German occupation in the branch of the Reich Office for Soil Research in Lemberg and Warsaw as a geologist. After the war he was briefly at the University of Lublin (1944) and from 1945 at the University of Warsaw as a senior assistant to Jana Samsonowicza in the geological faculty and from 1947 to 1951 as an assistant professor. In 1954 he received his doctorate on the Cretaceous ( Callovian ) fauna of Łuków with Jana Samsonowicza and Romana Kozłowskiego. He later remained connected to the Lukow fossil site. Then he was associate professor and in 1967 full professor at the University of Warsaw. From 1956 to 1958 he was dean of the Faculty of Geology and from 1959 to 1980 he headed the Department of Historical Geology.

In 1962 he published the discovery of the sexual dimorphism of ammonites . Independently of him, this happened in 1963 by John Callomon . The topic was also the subject of his last publication in 1991 (Sexual Dimorphism in Tornoceras ). In 1977 he was the editor of a Polish textbook on historical geology. In 1963 he took part in the first Polish-Mongolian paleontological expedition to the Gobi desert.

In 1959 he received the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta and in 1971 the Gold Cross of Merit . From 1976 to 1981 he was editor of Acta Geologica Polonica.
