Life
Herb Wiedoeft was the son of German immigrants and began his music career in the early 1920s in Los Angeles, where he performed with his own band; he achieved his breakthrough with his long commitment to the Cinderella Roof. His recordings under the band name Cinderella Roof Garden Orchestra for Brunswick (including " Oh! Gee, Oh! Gosh, Oh! I'm in Love ") quickly made his orchestra known along the west coast of the USA ; his signature tune was the Cinderella Blues.
A total of three teams of brothers played in the Wiedoeft Band; one of them were the Wiedoft brothers Herb, Gerhardt as bassist, Adolph as drummer and best known the saxophonist Rudy Wiedoeft , who soon left the band and went to New York; then the two Rose brothers and also the two Lucas brothers, one of whom Clyde Lucas would later lead a big band himself. Clyde Lucas, Dub Kirkpatrick and the Wiedoft Trio acted as band singers .
In May 1928, Herb Wiedoeft, who was driving between Medford and Klamath Falls, was killed in a traffic accident. Then trombonist Jess Stafford took over the band and moved their headquarters to San Francisco , where they performed at the Palace Hotel for the next three years ; then as a theater orchestra for a few years until Stafford died in 1937.
