Herbert Frederick Winnington-Ingram
Herbert Frederick Winnington-Ingram (* 1820 ; † 1889 ) was a British Rear Admiral .
Life
Herbert Frederick Winnington-Ingram was the youngest son of Reverend Edward Winnington-Ingram (* 1785) and his wife Jane (née Onslow). This in turn was a son of Edward Winnington, 2nd Baronet and had added Ingram to the family name in 1817.
Winnington-Ingram served in the Royal Navy . In 1833 he entered the Royal Naval College in Portsmouth . From February 1835 he served on the HMS Actaeon under the command of Captain Edward Russell . From 1838 to 1840 he was a midshipman on the HMS Talbot under the command of Captain Henry Codrington . In 1840 Winnington-Ingram was promoted to mate on this ship and a short time later to sub-lieutenant . He later served on HMS L'Aigle under the command of Captain Clarence Paget . Further stations in his career included the HMS Raleigh , on which he served as a lieutenant , the HMS Inconstant and the HMS Boscawen , where he served as first lieutenant on both of the latter . In 1858 he was given command of the HMS Argus . From 1866 to 1869 he commanded the supply ship HMS Egmont , which was anchored in the port of Rio de Janeiro during this time . He lived there with his family and returned to England in 1869. In 1871 he retired. From 1885 to 1889 he published occasional articles in the Illustrated Naval and Military Magazine . In 1889 he published his autobiography Hearts of Oak .
Winnington-Ingram married Catherine Twining († 1910) in 1856. Several children were born from the marriage. Rear Admiral Charles William Winnington-Ingram and the Bishop of London Arthur Winnington-Ingram were his nephews.
