Herbert Görtz (* 1955 in Aachen ) is a German conductor and director of the Aachen department of the Cologne University of Music and Dance .

Herbert Görtz began his music career as a choirboy in the Aachen Cathedral Choir . After graduating from the Kaiser-Karls-Gymnasium in Aachen , he later studied at the music academies in Cologne and Salzburg with a focus on conducting , which he graduated with honors. He was then hired as an assistant to the Federal Youth Orchestra and the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn . This was followed by engagements as Kapellmeister at the Oberhausen Theater and the Braunschweig State Theater as well as the Deputy General Music Director in Münster. He took on other temporary assignments or guest appearances at home and abroad, including in Italy, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Austria and the Ukraine, as well as gala and song evenings with, for example, Gundula Janowitz , Siegfried Jerusalem , Hermann Prey , Anne Schwanewilms and Iris Vermillion . Herbert Görtz conducted more than 1000 performances in the fields of opera, operetta, musical, ballet and children's opera and worked with well-known directors such as Willy Decker , Dominique Mentha and Gert Westphal . His repertoire includes important works from all eras and with the most varied of compositions; from Gregorian chant to new music .

In 1993 Görtz accepted a call to the Cologne University of Music and Dance, which appointed him professor for orchestra, choir and ensemble direction in the Aachen department. A few years later he also took over the musical direction of the university's own symphony orchestra and, in cooperation with the Theater Aachen, the musical direction of the opera school. Herbert Görtz was elected dean from 2001 to 2005 and finally appointed managing director of the Aachen University of Music in 2009. He held this office until 2019.

One of Herbert Görtz's priorities is promoting young talent through music educational programs and children's concerts, as well as opening up and presenting the music college to a broad, interested audience. This also includes the class auditions of the various vocal and instrumental classes, which are freely accessible to everyone, as well as performances with the university musicians outside of their own facilities in the entire city ​​region of Aachen .

In addition, Herbert Görtz has been chairman of the "Friends of Aachen Cathedral Music" association since 2005.
