Herbert G. Göpfert

Herbert Georg Oskar Ernst Göpfert (born September 22, 1907 in Stützerbach ; † April 20, 2007 in Munich ) was a German publisher , editor and honorary professor of books and publishing at the University of Munich .

Life and work

From 1928 Göpfert studied philosophy, German, history, art history, dramaturgy and theology in Jena, Berlin, Vienna and Greifswald. He then worked as a high school teacher before he went to Langen Müller Verlag as a lecturer in 1935 . In 1948 Göpfert moved to Carl Hanser Verlag , where he eventually became head editor.

At Hanser he was mainly responsible for the classic editions: he edited large complete editions of the works of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing , Friedrich Schiller and Eduard Mörike . He also looked after the writer Elias Canetti , whose novel Die Blendung was published by Hanser in 1963.

At the end of 1964 Göpfert moved to the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, where he founded and established the subject of books and publishing as an honorary professor . As a consultant and publisher, he remained connected to Hanser Verlag. In addition to Karl Richter, he was once again involved as co-editor of the so-called Munich edition of the works of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe .
