Herbert Goldschmidt

Herbert Goldschmidt (born September 1, 1890 in Strehlen , Province of Silesia , † 1943 in the Riga concentration camp ) was a German local politician in Magdeburg .

Goldschmidt was of Jewish descent. After training as a lawyer , he took up a job in the Magdeburg city administration in 1919. In 1920 he was appointed magistrate and in 1929 paid town councilor.

On May 16, 1931, he became deputy mayor of Magdeburg, Ernst Reuter . His field of work was in particular to combat the negative effects of the global economic crisis with local resources. With the takeover of the Nazis in 1933 lost Goldschmidt, as well as Ernst Reuter, office. Goldschmidt was arrested by the Gestapo that same year . In 1943 he was murdered in the Riga concentration camp .

The city of Magdeburg has named a street in his honor, the Goldschmidtring .

Commemoration

On April 24, 2014 , a stumbling block was laid in front of his former home, Droysenstrasse 18, in Berlin-Charlottenburg .
