Herbert Kronke

Herbert Erich Johannes Kronke (* 1950 in Korbach ) is a German lawyer and professor emeritus at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg .

Life

Kronke studied law at the Universities of Mainz , Edinburgh and Hamburg . In 1979 he did his doctorate with his work Legal Facts, Conflict Law Development and Employee Protection in International Labor Law in Munich with Erik Jayme as a Dr. jur. He then worked at the Max Planck Institute in Hamburg until he completed his habilitation in Trier in 1987 under Bernd von Hoffmann . Professorships at the Universities of Cologne and Bielefeld followed . In the winter semester 1992/1993 he accepted a position at the University of Heidelberg , which is still active today. He holds the chair for civil law, commercial law, international private law and comparative law and director of the institute for foreign and international private and commercial law. However, Kronke has been on leave since September 2012 because he was appointed judge of the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal (IUSCT) in The Hague . At times Kronke also acted as dean of the law faculty. From 1998 to 2008 he was Secretary General of UNIDROIT .

Kronke is a member of the working committee for international commercial practice of the German regional group of the International Chamber of Commerce, the ICC Commission on Arbitration, the German Institution for Arbitration, the Swiss Arbitration Association, the Austrian Association for Arbitration, the London Court of International Arbitration (European User Group ), the panels of the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC) and the Cairo Regional Center for International Commercial Arbitration. In addition, he acts as an arbitrator in various international institutions.

In 2009 Herbert Kronke was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class by Federal President Horst Köhler . He is also the holder of the Rio Branco Order (Ordem de Rio Branco) awarded to him by the government of the State of Brazil . In addition, the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary, and in 2013 the International Hellenic University in Thessaloniki, Greece awarded him an honorary doctorate. He has been a full member of the Academia Europaea since 2010 .

Herbert Kronke retired in 2016.
