Herbert Menges

Herbert Menges (born August 27, 1902 , † February 20, 1972 ) was an English conductor and composer .

Menges was a musical child prodigy and played the violin at the age of three. In 1925 he conducted the Brighton Symphonic Players founded by his mother for the first time , which he led as the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra until his death. He was also musical director of the Royalty Theater and founded the London Rehearsal Orchestra in 1931 . He was also conductor at the Old Vic Theater from 1931 to 1950 and conducted orchestras such as the Philharmonia Orchestra , the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra . Soloists such as Artur Rubinstein , Myra Hess and Solomon performed under his direction. With Solomon and the Philharmonia Orchestra, he recorded Beethoven's five piano concertos in the 1950s . Menges composed music for all of Shakespeare's plays . He was the father of director Chris Menges .
