Athletic career

The career in the second-rate GDR league began for the 23-year-old Herbert Nekwapil in the second half of the 1968/69 season, when he was used as a center forward in 14 league games at the Greifswalder Betriebsportgemeinschaft (BSG) Kernkraftwerk. For the 1969/70 season he appeared for the first time in the squad of the 1st team, but was only used in the first half of the season until November in the GDR league, mostly only as a substitute. He then had to do 18 months of military service in the National People's Army . After his return he rejoined the BSG KKW and at the end of the 1970/71 season he was a substitute twice. 1971/2 Nekwapil only played the first four point games in the GDR league, after which he only appeared again in the 1973/74 season in the first team after center forward Lothar Lehmann had switched to the upper division Energie Cottbus . Nekwapil played 20 of the 22 league games, initially as a center forward, in the second half of the season in midfield. This season he scored his first five goals in the GDR league. Until 1979 he was able to assert himself as a regular player in the GDR league team and became one of the most dangerous goal scorers of the BSG KKW. His most successful season was 1974/75, when he played all 22 point games and scored the most goals of the season in his GDR league time with ten goals. In 1976, nine goals and in 1979 seven goals were enough to make the Greifswald top scorer. The season 1978/79 was Nekwapils last season in the GDR-wide football game operation. He played another 20 games as a left winger, after which he ended his career as a competitive athlete, in which he made 144 appearances in GDR league games and scored 39 goals there.
