Athletic career

Stegemann belongs to the Wismar generation of football players who ensured successful football in the Baltic city between 1946 and 1952. The sports community (SG) Wismar Süd belonged to the circle of soccer teams that took part in the first Eastern Zone Championship in 1948 . She had qualified as Mecklenburg's runner-up , the 24-year-old Herbert Stegemann was called up in the position of right winger. SG Süd did not survive the quarter-finals of the Eastern Zone Championship after a 3-1 defeat at Freiimfelde Halle, but was able to secure the national championship title in the following 1948/49 season. In the decisive game at SG Schwerin on April 10, 1949, Wismar won 1-0 with right-winger Stegemann. SG Süd was thus also qualified for the 2nd East Zone Championship in 1949 , but was eliminated again in the quarter-finals after a 10:10 defeat at Fortuna Erfurt.

As a national champion, Wismar had also acquired the right to start the first season of the newly founded upper league of the East German sports committee. Under the new name ZSG Anker Wismar, the team played against relegation from the start, so there was a clear 0:11 defeat at SG Dresden-Friedrichstadt on the 5th matchday. At the end of the season, the ZSG had to play a game of relegation against the tied team of SG Altenburg Nord, which was lost 3-2. Stegemann was missing in this game, but he had previously played 19 of the 26 point games played and scored two goals as a regular right winger.

In 1950/51, the ZSG anchor had to compete in the second-rate GDR league after relegation . Right winger Stegemann was in all 16 point games and scored two goals again. The ZSG was at the end of the season together with the SG Volkspolizei Potsdam at the top of the table in the northern season and had to play again, this time for promotion to the league. In the meeting held on April 15, 1951 in Stendal, Stegemann was in his right wing position with the game, and after a 2-1 victory over the People's Police , Wismar returned to the league after a year.

In the new league season 1951/52, the Wismarers, who competed under a new name as BSG Motor, were all about staying up. However, this was awarded with 22 defeats in 36 games. The 28-year-old Stegemann only played eight league games. His last league game for Motor Wismar he completed on August 29, 1951, the 11th match day. In the match between Chemie Leipzig and Motor Wismar (1: 7), he also scored his last point goal. In the 9th minute he had surprisingly shot his team in the lead as a right winger.
