Herbert Woodfield Paul (born January 16, 1853 in Finedon , † August 4, 1935 ) was a British politician and non-fiction author.

Life

Paul was born in Finedon, Northamptonshire in 1853 as the eldest son of local Vicar George Woodfield Paul and his wife Jessie Philippa . He attended Eton College and the Corpus Christi College of Oxford University . There he was President of the Oxford Union . In 1878 Paul was admitted to Lincoln's Inn , but he never practiced as a lawyer to focus on his writing. So he established himself as a journalist for The Daily News . In 1883 Paul married Elinor Budworth , with whom he had two children, a son and a daughter. Between 1901 and 1910 Paul published seven books, of which the five-volume History of Modern England is considered the most important. He died in 1935.

Political career

In the general election of 1892 Paul ran for the Liberal Party for the constituency of Edinburgh South . He inherited his party colleague Hugh Childers , who had held the mandate since 1886 and did not run for these elections. On election day, Paul prevailed against the Liberal Unionist Lewis McIver and subsequently moved into the British House of Commons for the first time . In the subsequent general election in 1895 , Paul was unable to defend his mandate. He was defeated by the Liberal Unionist Robert Cox and initially left the House of Commons.

Paul did not run again until the elections in 1906 . He had since returned to his home in Northamptonshire and was running for the constituency of Northampton . In addition to his party colleague John Greenwood Shipman , he received one of two seats in the constituency. Paul recovered slowly from a nervous breakdown in 1907 and did not run in the general election in January 1910 .
