Herbert Zapp

Herbert Zapp (born March 15, 1928 in Stuttgart ; † June 27, 2004 ) was a German banker and art patron .

Zapp studied law , received his doctorate in 1953 in Tübingen on "The commitment authorization: At the same time a contribution to the doctrine of authorization as an independent legal figure" and then joined the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Finance as personal assistant to Finance Minister Karl Frank .

In 1960 he moved to Deutsche Bank . After five years of managing the Ulm branch, he took over the management of the main Mannheim branch. In 1972 he received general power of attorney . In 1977 Herbert Zapp was appointed to the board of directors of the credit institute , to which he was a member until 1994. Most recently, he was responsible for corporate banking as well as for the legal and tax departments. Regionally, he was responsible for the Düsseldorf branch and for international business in Latin America. He built up the corporate planning department for Deutsche Bank . Zapp was particularly interested in the further development of corporate customer business with medium-sized and smaller companies.

He made a name for himself in particular as the founder of the Deutsche Bank art collection : as early as 1979, he suggested to his fellow board members that they make purchases for the design of the bank building. The concept was primarily to acquire works by young artists on paper. He also suggested the establishment of a company's own art library and an art library. Zapp was socially and culturally involved in a variety of ways. In 1984 he initiated the pioneering art exhibition From Here in Düsseldorf . For many years he was committed to the Mannheim Art Association and was a co-founder of the Robert Schumann Society in Düsseldorf. He was a member of the advisory board of the Villa Romana Association in Florence, which annually awards grants to young artists. For his work in business and culture, Zapp received numerous honors and awards such as B. the Adam Elsheimer Prize of the art fair Art Frankfurt .

Herbert Zapp Prize for Young Art

After his death, his widow Dorothea Maria Zapp donated the Herbert Zapp Prize for Young Art in 2006 . The prize, currently awarded every two years, is endowed with 10,000 euros and supports young artists who are at the beginning of their artistic careers. It should remember Herbert Zapp as a sponsor, encourager and patron of young art. The jury currently includes Eugen Blume, director of the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, Ulrike Lorenz, director of the Kunsthalle Mannheim and Pia Müller-Tamm, director of the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe. The winners so far are: 2006 Matt Saunders and Jorinde Voigt , 2007 Adriana Molder and Andreas Zybach, 2008 Christian Pilz and Dennis Scholl , 2010 Hanna Hennenkemper and Gabriela Oberkofler. The winner in 2010 is the artist Anna KE, since 2008 the prize has been awarded by the Mannheimer Kunstverein.
