Herbie Roberts

Herbert "Herbie" Roberts (born February 19, 1905 in Oswestry , † June 19, 1944 ) was an English football player and football coach.

life and career

Robert's first club was Owestry Town in his hometown. While playing at Town Football, he also worked as a police officer . In December 1926 he signed a contract with Arsenal FC . He made his debut on April 18, 1927 against Aston Villa . He played as a stopper with the Gunners. With Arsenal FC he was five times English champion and twice English cup winner. Internationally, he played once for the English national football team against Scotland in a friendly game on March 28, 1931. 1938 Roberts had to end his career because of a broken foot. After retiring, he coached Arsenal FC's second team before being drafted into the British Army for World War II . Roberts died on duty on June 19, 1944, at the age of only 39, of erysipelas .
