Badminton national team of the GDR

In 1961, plans began at DFV , the German Badminton Association, to build up the GDR's national badminton team . A short time later, these plans were turned into reality, but not in the sense of a team as a team, but as a group of individualists put together for international individual championships. The first international team match did not take place until 1967. The reason for this was, on the one hand, that the GDR did not take part in major international team events in western countries such as the Thomas Cup or the Uber Cup for a long time , and on the other hand, the neighboring Eastern Bloc countries at the beginning of the 1960s were still at the badminton stage - Developing country and were not a member of EBU or IBF . The attempt to gain a foothold on the international scene again at the end of the 1960s ended in fiasco: The Uber Cup team lost heavily to Scotland, and in the Thomas Cup, the GDR in 1967 South Africa was drawn due to the apartheid policy was boycotted economically, politically and also sportily, so that the attempt in the international badminton world was quickly over. It was not until the turning point in the GDR that was opening again for the GDR badminton players to the western world. Under the last national team coach Jens Scheithauer , the GDR took part in a European championship again after a single previous participation in 1972 after an 18-year break - and this took place in well-known Moscow , of all places .
