Herculaneum (band)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Herculaneum is a jazz ensemble from Chicago .

history

The members of the Herculaneum formation, founded in the early 2000s, come from the Chicago jazz scene, but also play in the city's indie rock bands such as Cursive and Icy Demons . The founding quintet included trumpeter Patrick Newbery, clarinetist David McDonnell, bassist Greg Danek, trombonist Nick Broste and drummer (sometimes also vibraphonist and pianist) Dylan Ryan, who leads the ensemble and composes almost all pieces. The frontline has (since 2012) again consists of three winds, after two woodwinds played in the group in between and other timbres (strings, guitar) were integrated; the group sound is percussive. The chamber music style of the third album, released in 2009, borrows from the groups of Jimmy Giuffre in the 1950s.

The ensemble also jammed with bands like Wilco , TV on the Radio , Cursive and Broken Social Scene , as well as free jazz musicians Daniel Carter and Paul Flaherty .
