The Hercules Dome is a large ice dome in Marie Byrd Land, West Antarctica . It rises from the Antarctic Ice Sheet between the Thiel Mountains and the Horlick Mountains .
The United States Geological Survey mapped it using aerial photographs taken by the United States Navy from 1959 to 1960. Its extent was determined using sonar tracking as part of a joint program between the Scott Polar Research Institute , the National Science Foundation and Denmark's Technical University between 1967 and 1979 determined. It is named after the Lockheed C-130 Hercules , which has been in service on flights in this program since 1969.
