history

The Herder Institute was founded in 1956 at the Karl Marx University of Leipzig (today: University of Leipzig ) as the “Institute for Foreign Studies”. It was an institute directly subordinate to the rector, which prepared foreign students in mostly one-year (language) courses for a degree in the GDR . The Herder Institute also had an assignment to send lecturers and lecturers to universities abroad. In 1961 the institute was renamed the Herder Institute . In 1968, the Herder Institute established the first chair for German as a foreign language in the entire German-speaking region: the chair was held by Gerhard Helbig .

The Herder Institute corresponded in many ways to the Goethe Institute of the Federal Republic of Germany.

For financial reasons, the previous Herder Institute had to be restructured from 1990 to 1993. For this purpose, three independent institutions from the former Herder Institute were set up, each with a different focus. Two new institutions were established from the former Herder Institute : in 1991 the preparatory college in Saxony , which prepares foreign students of all degree courses for a course of study, and in 1992 interDaF e. V. at the Herder Institute of the University of Leipzig , which as an independent association offers pre-university and university training. In 1993 the remaining institute was integrated into the philological faculty of the University of Leipzig with a smaller staff and serves the research and teaching of the subject German as a foreign language . In addition to bachelor's and master's degrees, doctoral degrees are now offered for this purpose. The Herder Institute continues to be the publisher of the specialist journal Deutsch als Fremdsprache, founded in 1964 . Journal on the theory and practice of German as a foreign language .

From 1962 to 1993 there was in Radebeul with the Herder Institute Radebeul Department, a “Central School for Foreign Citizens for Language Preparation for Production Engineering Training”.
