Airport and fortress

British fighter-bombers attack Herdla on December 27, 1941

During the Second World War , Herdla was a base for the German Air Force . The flat "Herdlevalen" area presented itself as a place for an airfield, and Herdla became the main German air base between Stavanger -Sola and Trondheim expanded -Værnes. The base served to protect the city of Bergen , its port and the western Norwegian coast. Herdla was declared " Herdla Fortress " and was equipped with all kinds of supply and defense facilities, including coastal batteries and (1944) a torpedo battery. All civilian residents, 115 at the time, had to leave the island. Usually around 3,000 German soldiers were stationed on Herdla. There were also several thousand Soviet prisoners of war who worked on the construction of the airfield. On December 27, 1941, the airfield was opened as part of the so-called " Operation Archery ". also known as “Måløy Raid”, attacked by British fighter bombers.

The inhabitants did not return to the island until 1945 after the end of the German occupation . Parts of the fortifications were then used and modernized by the Norwegian armed forces , and airspace control in the Bergen region was established at the former air base, which also served Bergen as an airfield, until the new Bergen Airport opened in 1955 . The coastal artillery positions and torpedo batteries of the Norwegian armed forces were closed in 2000 and are now partially open to the public in museums .
