Life

Heribert Potuznik completed an apprenticeship as a design lithographer between 1925 and 1929 and received his artistic training as a landscape painter with Karl Joseph Gunsam at the Josef Dobrowsky school and from 1940 with August Finkel at the art school in Danzig. He was one of the representatives of figural expressionism and had been a member of the Hagenbund since 1937 . Potuznik returned from captivity in 1946 and became a member of the “Strohkoffer” and belonged to the artist group “Der Kreis” from 1947 to 1955 and since 1956 to the Künstlerhaus Wien . In 1975 he was appointed professor.

As a Lower Austrian by choice, he worked in Fischamend and from 1960 in the Weinviertel, where he found a new home in the Hollabrunn area - Mariathal, then Großnondorf (municipality of Guntersdorf). Here he experienced his most fruitful creative periods. His great works were created, in addition to impressive landscapes, above all sgraffiti , such as the one at the Hollabrunn city hall , which is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. Heribert Potuznik died at the age of 74 in Großnondorf. A memorial in Großnondorf and a memorial room in Hollabrunn commemorates him.
