Heribert the Old (Troyes)

Heribert the Old (* probably 910/915; † 980/984) from the Carolingian family was Count of Omois from 943 , later also Count of Reims , Meaux and Troyes . He was the son of Count Heribert II of Vermandois and Adela of France.

After the death of his father (943) Heribert received the Omois (the land around Château-Thierry ). In 951 he married Eadgifu , daughter of King Edward the Elder of Wessex , the widow of King Charles III. , although it was Heribert's father in whose captivity Karl III. spent the last years of his life. During this time Eadgifu fled to England with her son Ludwig IV and after her return (Ludwig ascended the throne in 936) she was abbess of Notre-Dame in Laon until 951 . Heribert now became a loyal ally of his royal stepson and also of his son and successor Lothar , who appointed him Count Palatine in 967 , but also forced the county of Reims on him. After the death of his brother Robert von Vermandois , he brought the valley of the Marne between Meaux and Épernay under his control, and in 968 also the county of Troyes , although Robert had descendants entitled to inherit.

After his death (the marriage had remained childless as expected), King Lothar shared his property between his two nephews, Odo I of Blois , son of his sister Ledgard (he received Reims), and Heribert the Younger , son of his brother Robert of Vermandois (he received Meaux and Troyes).
