A herring paternoster is an artificial bait - paternoster , which is mainly used for herring fishing in salt water or brackish water .

Herring paternosters can either be bought ready-tied in fishing shops or they are tied yourself. Usually a herring paternoster is about 1.5 meters long and is made from a monofilament leader material. The leader is made of a 0.25 mm - 0.60 mm thick monofilament material to which one or more side arms are tied. The side arms are usually thinner than the main arm so that the side arm is more flexible than the main arm. The side arms are usually between 5 and 10 centimeters long. At the end of the side arm, a mostly gold-colored single hook is mounted to which a piece of "fish skin" is fixed with colored thread. This fish skin is either an artificial fabric or dried fish skin. Often, colored beads are also threaded onto the side arm above the hook.

These are bigger at the beginning and thinner towards the end. There are also noctilucent fish skins. Herring paternosters come in different shapes, colors and sizes.
