from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hermann Bartels (* 1928 in Riesenburg , West Prussia; † 1989 in Düsseldorf ) was a German painter and object artist .

life and work

Hermann Bartels was born in Riesenburg in 1928. In 1948 he began a four-year training course in portrait , landscape and art history in the Bernecker studio in Lüneburg . Finally he moved to Frankfurt am Main in 1952 , where he got in touch with the Quadriga artist group ( Karl Otto Götz , Bernard Schultze and others) through the Franck Gallery . In 1957 he went to Lausanne for a year and had his first solo exhibition there.

He was one of the protagonists of tachistic and new monochrome painting in Germany. Later he found completely new pictorial solutions, which consisted in assembling picture objects from several elements. Dealing with the image and thus one of the basic questions of Concrete Art remained Bartels' basic artistic principle throughout his life.

The Ingolstadt Foundation for Concrete Art and Design took over the artist's estate in spring 2010.
