Hermann Dewitz

Hermann Dewitz (born November 5, 1848 in Obehlischken near Insterburg , † May 15, 1890 in Berlin ) was a German entomologist who mainly dealt with butterflies. He was curator at the Museum für Naturkunde (Berlin) .

Dewitz attended grammar school in Insterburg and received his doctorate in zoology at the University of Königsberg in 1874 (comparative studies of the structure and development of the honeybee's sting and the sheath of the green grasshopper). He studied in particular with Ernst Gustav Zaddach .

Dewitz dealt particularly with butterflies from South America, West and Central Africa and in 1882 published a treatise on the caterpillars of exotic butterflies ( descriptions of juvenile stages of exotic lepidopterans , Nova Acta Leopoldina, Volume 44, No. 2), in 1879 on African day butterflies (Nova Acta Leopoldina , Volume 41, No. 2) and 1881 on African night butterflies (Nova Acta Leopoldina, Volume 42, No. 2).

On February 1, 1881 , he became a member of the Leopoldina .
