Hermann II of Gleiberg

Hermann II , Count von Gleiberg, was the son and successor of Count Hermann I von Gleiberg . Neither the date of birth nor the date of death are known, but he probably did not die until after 1095, perhaps not until 1104.

He was a grandson of Count Friedrich von Luxemburg and Irmtrud (Irmintrud) von der Wetterau, a daughter of Count Heribert von der Wetterau , through whose marriage Gleiberg Castle and the property belonging to it had come to the Luxembourg Counts after Heribert's death .

Hermann II von Gleiberg is often confused with his cousin Hermann von Salm , the son of his uncle Giselbert von Luxemburg . Hermann von Salm was the only member of his Luxembourg clan in the camp of the opponents of King Henry IV and was elected the opposing king in 1081.

Hermann von Gleiberg, on the other hand, was a loyal follower of Henry IV and distinguished himself particularly during his war against the Saxon rebels in the years 1073 to 1075. The chronicler Lampert von Hersfeld reports in his "Annales" of Heinrich's battle on June 9, 1075 near Homburg an der Unstrut against the Saxon peasant army under Otto von Northeim :

“The battle had dragged on from noon to the ninth hour, and it was already close to the fact that two armies from two countries, Swabia and Bavaria, turned to flee, and messengers repeatedly reported to the king that their people were in great danger Suddenly Count Hermann von Gleiberg on the one hand and the Bamberg men on the other approached to attack. Now the Duke of Bohemia , now the Duke Gozelo of Lorraine, throws their riders into battle with the reins in place. The Saxons could no longer withstand this enormous onslaught and slowly backed away. "
