Hermann III. Graf und Herr zu Castell (* around 1311 ; † around 1365 ) was ruler of the County of Castell from 1349 until his death . He shared the rule with his half-brother Friedrich .

The county before Hermann III.

The decisive event in the 13th century in the county of Castell was the division of the lines in 1265/1267. This was preceded by a dispute between the brothers Heinrich II and Hermann I zu Castell. While Heinrich made pacts with the Henneberg Counts, who were the greatest opponents of the Würzburg bishops, Hermann stood on the side of the bishops themselves. After the dispute, the lines from the Lower Castle , which Heinrich was in charge of, and the line from the Upper Castle with the ruler Hermann, emerged .

After the death of the two line founders, the sons Friedrich , from the Upper Castle, and Hermann II , the last of the Lower Castle line, came to power. Friedrich II expanded the fiefdoms that were given to the county by the Würzburg prince-bishopric. In addition, he received the right of escort for the bishop between Würzburg and Bamberg, and he also joined the Franconian Landfriedensbund.

Life

Hermann III. was born around 1311 as the son of Friedrich II and his first wife. The woman's name and her origin are not mentioned in the sources. The sources are also silent about the Count's siblings. Only the half-brother Friedrich III. was called. The young count was first mentioned in 1311. In 1349 he took over the government of the county from his father.

It is also recorded that Count Hermann held an office as a district judge in the Free Imperial City of Nuremberg . Here it was handed down from 1333 until his death. The last time as a count is Hermann III. attested in 1363. He probably died around 1365.

Marriage and offspring

The marriage of Count Hermann is not mentioned in the sources, only the first name of the wife, Luckard, is mentioned. Most of Hermann's children are not named either. Only the successors Wilhelm I and Johann have survived.
