Mentil represented the FPÖ in the National Council from November 7, 1994, but had to resign from all internal party functions after the financial affair around Peter Rosenstingl in 1998 as a regional party chairman. After Mentil did not want to resign from his National Council mandate, he was expelled from the FPÖ. From October 8, 1998, he was in the National Council without a club membership and resigned from parliament on October 28, 1999.
