Hermann Mercker (also Märker ; born January 23, 1583 in Hattingen ; † January 19, 1630 , ibid) was a German Protestant pastor and city chronicler.

Life

Mercker was a son of the Hattingen city councilor and mayor Konrad Frolingh called Mercker; his mother Anna Wyschmann was a daughter of the pastor Erasmus Wiesmann. In 1600, after attending Latin school, Mercker enrolled at the University of Marburg at the age of only 17 . At the same time he was the owner of the Vicarie St. Stephanie in Hattingen. From 1604 he attended the University of Wittenberg . In 1605 he returned to the neighboring town of Herbede as a pastor and in 1606 founded the first parish school for the education and instruction of the youth.

In November 1613 he was appointed city preacher by the city council of Hattingen; he gave his inaugural sermon on December 1, 1613. In December 1619, Mercker was introduced to the first pastorate at the Church of St. Georg in Hattingen.

Mercker had been married to the widow Hilla Holscher née Kuhweidt since September 6, 1606. After Mercker's death on March 9, 1632, she married the mayor of Hattingen, Rötger Langrötger. The son Johann Bertram Mercker (1611–1674) was also pastor in Hattingen, the son Johann Anton Mercker († 1691) and the grandson Johann Mercker were pastors in Essen.

During his tenure, Mercker kept a church book in which, in addition to a "general ledger and accounting book" (directory of church income), news about the history of Hattingen and the history of the local church are recorded. In 1977 this work was made accessible in a typescript. The work was printed in 1992.
