During the November Revolution , Reich was a member of the Hamburg Soldiers' Council , which he represented at the Reichsrätekongress in December 1918 , where he belonged to the faction of the United Revolutionaries . From 1919 to 1920 he acted as party secretary of the Hamburg USPD, worked for the War Welfare Office and was elected to the Reichstag for the USPD in July 1920 ; he was a member of the Hamburg citizenship from 1919 to 1922. In 1919 and 1920, Reich was, alongside Ernst Thälmann, the best-known spokesman for the left wing of the party in Hamburg, which dominated the party's regional association there and campaigned for the USPD to join the Communist International .

At the end of 1920, Reich belonged to the left majority wing of the USPD, which merged with the KPD to form the VKPD , which he left in September 1921 after the internal party conflicts over the March action . Initially a member of the Communist Working Group (KAG) around Paul Levi and Ernst Däumig , Reich joined the KPD faction as an intern in November 1922 after it was absorbed into the USPD in 1922 and later joined the SPD faction.

Reich later moved to Berlin, where he ran an inn and in 1931 he joined the newly founded Socialist Workers' Party (SAPD). After the takeover of the Nazi party , he was temporarily at a member of the national leadership of the illegal SAPD, but was arrested in September 1933 and in December 1934 by the People's Court sentenced to 15 months in prison.

After 1945, Reich belonged to the SPD.
