Hermann Rhein

Hermann Rhein (born October 26, 1867 in Bremen ; † August 10, 1960 ibid.) Was a German SPD politician and Senator from Bremen .

Life

Hermann Rhein attended elementary school and learned the profession of typesetter . He went on a wandering journey and then worked in various printing houses in Bremen. In 1887 he became a member of the book printer association . In 1891 he joined the SPD. In 1894 he succeeded Friedrich Ebert as editor of the SPD - close to Bremer Bürgerzeitung . From 1894, Rhein was an honorary member of the board of the Allgemeine Ortskrankenkasse (AOK) in Bremen. In 1933 he had to resign from this task. In 1945 he was again briefly director of the AOK

In 1900, the Rhine was elected to the Bremen citizenship . In the SPD parliamentary group executive he was secretary and from 1905 - as successor to Friedrich Ebert - parliamentary group chairman .

In November 1918, after the First World War , he was first elected to the Workers 'and Soldiers' Council in Bremen and was a member of the Action Committee. When the USPD confiscated the Bremer Bürgerzeitung at the end of December 1918, Rhein left the council. He was now a staunch opponent of the Bremen Soviet Republic , which the SPD fought.

In 1919 he stood as the top candidate of the SPD for the election of the Bremen National Assembly on March 9th. From April 10, 1919 he belonged to the provisional government under Karl Deichmann (SPD) in Bremen. From May 18, 1919 until 1920 he was Senator for Social Affairs in Martin Donandt's Senate (non-party). He then belonged to the Bremen citizenship until 1928. From 1928 to November 1, 1931, he was again Senator in Martin Donandt's Senate, responsible for schools and culture.

In 1933, under pressure from the National Socialists, he also lost his position at the AOK and he retired from work.

Herrmann Rhein died on August 10, 1960 at the age of 92 in Bremen

Honors

In Bremen- Kattenturm the Hermann-Rhein-Weg was named after him.
