Life

Hermann Schein was born in Leipzig as the son of Wilhelmine (née Füssel) and Bernard Schein. His mother was an Austrian Catholic and his father a Czechoslovak Jew from Moravian Ostrau , who met in England. Bernard Schein was a staunch anti-fascist and actively fought against the Wehrmacht in the Czechoslovak Army , before settling with his family in Leipzig in 1946, where Hermann Schein grew up. After finishing school, he first learned electrical engineering and then graduated from high school. He then went to Quedlinburg , where he worked as an assistant director from 1970 to 1976 . In 1980 he completed his directing studies at the Institute for Drama Directing in Berlin . He then directed as senior director, first in Frankfurt an der Oder and then in Berlin. After the fall of the Berlin Wall he was involved in the founding of the Magdeburg Theater , where he worked as a director from 1991 to 1998. He then worked at the Bielefeld Theater for four years before he worked as a freelancer at various theaters, a. a. at the Deutsches Theater in Göttingen, the Dresden State Theater , the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin, the Hessian State Theater in Darmstadt and the Saarland State Theater in Saarbrücken.

Thematically, Hermann Schein's work moved in an extensive field of tension between politics and society, and accordingly the selection of his productions. His collaboration with Robert Menasse , whose fist play Doctor Hoechst he premiered in Darmstadt, attracted a lot of attention . Barbara Petsch ( Die Presse ) wrote in her review that Darmstadt and Menasse had "almost given the Faust euphoria a bang, by which at least the next more modern 'Faust' adaptations will be measured".
