Hermann Schmidt (pedagogue)

Hermann Schmidt (born December 28, 1932 in Nümbrecht ) is a German professional and business educator who was President of the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) from 1977 until he retired in early 1998 .

Life

He graduated from the University of Cologne with a degree in economics with a focus on business administration , economic geography and business education , which he began in 1953 as a business teacher . This was followed by preparatory service for teaching at vocational schools , after which he received his doctorate in Cologne. rer. pole.

From 1960 to 1969 Hermann Schmidt worked as a teacher, most recently as senior director of studies at a commercial vocational school in Cologne. He later moved to the North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry of Education and Culture and, as ministerial director of the vocational education department, to the Federal Ministry of Education and Science.

The University of Duisburg recognized his outstanding academic achievements and his services to vocational training policy and research in vocational training in 1995 with the award of the honorary doctorate (Dr. hc) and appointed him honorary professor on March 1, 1999 .

With numerous publications and memberships in national and international committees, Hermann Schmidt was one of the prominent personalities in vocational training research at home and abroad. In 1997 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class, for his services in this area .

The Hermann Schmidt Prize , first announced in 1997 and annually since then, is named after him. It is awarded by the non-profit "Association of Innovative Professional Education" (founded in 1996 by W. Bertelsmann Verlag together with the Federal Institute for Professional Education). Its aim is to initiate, promote and publicize innovative developments in vocational training practice.
