Hermann Späth (pastor)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carl Hermann Späth (born September 24, 1824 in Nürtingen , † November 17, 1894 in Breslau ) was a German Protestant pastor and author of Protestant liberalism .

Life

Späth studied Protestant theology in Tübingen from 1844 to 1849 . In 1856 he passed the exam in Stuttgart and after 1860 took up his first pastor's position in Gründelhardt .

Contrary to the wishes of the Upper Church Council of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg , at the suggestion of free-spirited circles, the city church council and the Oldenburg city council, Späth was allowed to vote for the pastorate at the Lambertikirche in Oldenburg and decided the election in 1869.

Späth was close to free-thinking associations such as the German Protestant Association and was therefore in constant conflict with the faithful circles of the royal seat of Oldenburg. In 1870 he wrote a petition for the city council of Churches, which attacked the previous undemocratic church constitution and called for direct elections to the regional synod, extension of parish suffrage for communities and a guarantee of freedom of belief and teaching. In 1872 he founded the liberal Evangelical Preachers ' Association in order to "balance Christianity with the overall development of culture in the struggle against the forces pushing backwards".

In 1877 he was finally elected pastor primarius at St. Elisabeth in Breslau and as the local church inspector there. Here Späth played a decisive role in the reshuffle of the city's Protestant church constitution, the replacement of the city's patronage and founded the Association of Protestant Parishes as the body responsible for church self-government.
