Hermann Wiegand

Hermann Wiegand (born January 1, 1951 in Heidelberg ) is a German high school teacher, headmaster and neo-Latin philologist .

Hermann Wiegand attended the Kurfürst-Friedrich-Gymnasium in Heidelberg from 1962 to 1970 and studied Classical Philology, Middle and New Latin Philology, History, Theology and German at the University of Heidelberg from 1970 to 1975 . In 1977 he became a teacher at the Karl-Friedrich-Gymnasium in Mannheim, whose director he was from 1996 until his retirement in 2014. In 1983 he received his doctorate at the University of Heidelberg with a thesis on the Hodoeporica (the neo-Latin travel poetry ), the second neo-Latin dissertation in Germany after that of Paul Gerhard Schmidt . He has been a lecturer there since 1987, and since 2001 he has been an honorary professor of neo-Latin literature at Heidelberg University. Since 2007 he has been chairman of the Mannheimer Altertumsverein , of which he has been a board member since 1982.

Wiegand's areas of work are Middle and Neo-Latin literature , German literature and history, and in particular the literature and regional history of southwest Germany .
