Hermann von Lerbeck
Hermann von Lerbeck (* around 1345, † around 1410) was a learned Dominican and chronicler .
Life
Little data is known about the life of Hermann von Lerbeck. Only a papal appointment document from 1391 has survived. The name of Lerbeck suggests that Hermann comes from the village of Lerbeck , which today belongs to Porta Westfalica . A ministerial family of the same name that owned land in the area around Minden is occasionally mentioned in documents from the 13th to 15th centuries.
Hermann von Lerbeck entered the Dominican monastery Sankt Pauli in Minden around 1365 . There he was likely to have had contact with the chronicler Heinrich von Herford , whose works later served him as a source . Around 1380 he completed his Minden diocese history "Catalogus episcoporum Mindensium" , which covered the years from 780 to 1379. Pope Boniface IX appointed him chaplain in 1391 . He spent the following time at the court of the Counts of Schaumburg , where he wrote his "Chronicon comitum Schauwenburgensium" between 1400 and 1404 , which sheds light on the period from 1030 onwards. From references by other Dominicans from the 15th century it is known that Hermann von Lerbeck also wrote a chronicle of Duke Widukind .
His works were characterized by a clear and factual presentation, whereby he resisted the temptation to hide his knowledge gaps by creating legends.
