Hermannschacht (Wölbling)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hermannschacht is a settlement and an abandoned coal mine in the municipality of Wölbling in Lower Austria .

history

To the north of Hermannschacht there was already a small mining operation, which has been documented since 1794. After the Niederösterreichische Kohlengewerkschaft AG acquired this company in 1898 , they built the Herrmannschacht mining facility and, in 1899, the Leopoldschacht in neighboring Anzenhof . The relatively shallow deposits could be reached with shafts up to a depth of max. 60 m can be reached. The mined bright coal was brought to the coal sorting facility at Statzendorf station on a factory railway and then loaded. After 1918, the Statzendorfer Kohlenwerk Zieglerschächte AG ran the business until it was liquidated in 1940, but mining continued on a small scale until the 1960s and the site was then parceled, sold and settled.

Situation today

Behind the small settlement of Hermannschacht is the huge waste dump and the remains of the processing plants at the Statzendorf train station. But also in the places around Hermannschacht there is still a lot to remind of the former coal mining area.
