Hermitage Castle is a half-ruined castle at the Hermitage Water in the region Scottish Borders in Scotland . It is under the care of Historic Scotland , the Scottish Government's agency for historical monuments. The castle has a reputation for being one of the scariest and most atmospheric in Scotland due to its history and appearance.

history

It is believed that the name derives from the old French l'armitage ("guard house"). It was known as the guardhouse of the bloodiest valley in Britain as well as the force of Liddesdale . Hermitage Castle is also inextricably linked to the history of Clan Armstrong , whose chief had his headquarters in nearby Mangerton Castle and who played a special role in defending the border with England.

The first castle was made of wood and was probably built by a Nicholas de Soulis around 1240, at that time still in the shape of a typical Norman moth . The castle remained in his family until around 1320, when his descendant William Soulis was accused of witchcraft and the attempted regicide of Robert I and the land and castle were taken as forfeited pledge. Legend has it that Souli's tenant, suffering excruciating looting, held him near the Ninestane Rigg , a stone circle , and boiled him to death in liquid lead .
