The Hermitage Water is a watercourse in the Scottish Borders , Scotland . It arises from the confluence of the Twislehope Burn and Billhope Burn . It initially flows in an easterly direction and runs south of the Hermitage Castle . After the mouth of the Whitrope Burn , it turns in a southerly direction.

From the confluence of the Whitrope Burn to the confluence with the Liddel Water , the B6399 road runs along the Hermitage Water. Shortly before it flows into Liddel Water east of the hamlet of Sandholm , the Hermitage Viaduct of the railway crossed the river.
