Map of Cape Horn with Hermite Islands and Wollaston Islands |
The Hermite Islands ( Spanish Islas Hermite ) are an uninhabited group of islands in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago in the extreme south of Chile , around 80 km south of Puerto Williams . Administratively, the islands belong to the municipality of Cabo de Hornos in the Región de Magallanes y de la Antártica Chilena . The Yámana called the islands Samajani , today they are named after the Dutch admiral Jacques L'Hermite .
geography
The archipelago includes seven islands and numerous rocks. The largest and highest island at 516 m above sea level is Isla Hermite (143.59 km²) in the west of the group, other large islands are Isla Herschel (65.81 km²) and Isla Deceit (40.40 km²) in the east. The most famous island, however, is Hornos , in the south of the group; on it is Cape Horn , at the southern tip of South America. North of the Hermite Islands are the Wollaston Islands . Both archipelagos are separated by the Franklin Canal , which measures 1.3 km (from Isla Herschel to Isla Freycinet ) to 1.5 km (from Isla Herschel to Isla Wollaston ) at its narrowest points .
In the west, the Bahía Nassau separates the archipelago (especially the Isla Hermite) from False Cape Horn, 16 km away on the Hardy Peninsula of Hoste Island . In the south lies Drake Street , which separates South America from the Antarctic continent . The Diego Ramírez Islands with the southernmost point of South America are located 81 kilometers to the southwest .
