Herodotus (* 1794 in Ivenack ; † 1829 ibid.) Was a German stallion from the Graflich Plessen stud farm in Ivenack.

Life

The gray apple Herodot was born in 1794 at the Ivenack stud in Mecklenburg, the son of the English stallion Morwick Ball. Although he never ran a race, he was considered one of the most famous stallions of his time.

There are many legends about the fate of the gray horse. When Mecklenburg was occupied by the French army, Napoleon is said to have personally given instructions to look for the animal and bring it to France. In Ivenack one should have tried in vain to bring the horse to safety from the French by hiding it in the hollow trunk of one of the Ivenack oaks . It is said that Napoleon rode Herodotus before Moscow or in Paris. Herodotus is said to have been the subject of negotiations at the Congress of Vienna and Blücher is said to have campaigned for the horse to be returned to its owner in Mecklenburg. In the meantime he had already sent his stable master from Ivenack to France with the task of locating the stallion and bringing it home, which finally succeeded. Half-blind, Herodotus lived in Ivenack for about 10 years after his return, is said to have died there at the age of 35 and was buried under an oak tree between Stavenhagen and Ivenack. The family tree of Herodotus, among whose descendants there were many famous stallions, hung for a long time in the Ivenack stables and his burial place was still known after a century as "Herodoteiche".

Replaced by a new tree, the Herodoteiche still exists today. According to information from those familiar with the area, it stands as a single tree in the open field on the right-hand side of the Stavenhagen – Demmin road about halfway between the exit of Stavenhagen and Basepohl.
